Grand Marshals announced for Bay Area Fun Festival Parade

The Bay Area Rotary Club is pleased to announce the grand marshals for this year Bay Area Fun Festival Parade which commemorates Coos Bay’s son Steve Prefontaine.  The festival theme is “Celebrating 40 Years.” In keeping with the theme, the club is encouraging parade participants to honor Prefontaine, who died 40 years ago in Eugene, by decorating their float around Prefontaine and his philosophy which changed the running world forever.

This years Grand Marshalls are Frank Shorter and Jay Farr.  Shorter won a gold medal in Marathon in the 1972 Munich Olympic Games.  Local businessman Farr was Pre’s team and classmate.  He represents the Steve Prefontaine Memorial Run and a contingent of the current Marshfield High School Track Team.

Frank Shorter joins the celebration this weekend to pay tribute to his friend Steve Prefontaine. Shorter was a teammate to Pre on their quest for Gold in Munich. In addition to his Gold Medal, Shorter was a four-time winner of the Fukuoka Marathon (1971, 1972, 1973, and 1974), and he won a Silver Medal in the 1976 Montreal Olympics. Shorter remembers his friend and teammate Steve Prefontaine who died tragically 40 years ago in 1975. Shorter was the last person to share time with Pre moments before the accident that took his life. The Bay Area Rotary Club welcomes Frank Shorter and thank him and Farr for their participation in this year’s Fun Festival.
